MAI’s marketing and public relations manager, Aye Maya Thar, told local media that the airline plans to launch services to UAE in 2015, but gave no details.

Before the agreement signed on 10 March, Myanmar and UAE had no aviation treaties.

In the new treaty, Myanmar lists MAI as the first airline to be awarded rights to fly to UAE, while the UAE listed Emirates, RAK, Air Arabia and Aerovista as designated airlines.

Some countries that had aviation treaties with Myanmar modified their agreements or signed new treaties since 2010 mainly to add multiple destinations rather than being limited to just Yangon.

Myanmar has treaties with 46 countries. The earliest were with the United States that signed agreements in 1949.

MAI has a fleet of 11 planes and serve Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia, Malaysia, India, China, Japan and South Korea.

The airline is 80% owned by Kanbawza Bank with a 20% stake held by the government through its 100% owned airline Myanmar Airways.
