From early morning until late at night, tourists to the northern city of Hai Phong may enjoy a variety of cuisine and drinks.
Food excursions have been increasingly popular in Hai Phong tourism in recent years. The Hai Phong Department of Tourism has created a food tour map for tourists and residents to conveniently identify and enjoy local cuisine. Cat Bi market, one of the stops on the Hai Phong culinary tour itinerary, is shown in the photo.
Crab noodle soup
When you begin your cuisine tour in the morning, you may start with a typical Hai Phong-style breakfast of crab noodle soup. They may be found all throughout the city, at the start of any alley or in eateries such as Bao Yen at 29/31 Nguyen Binh Khiem street or Lach Tray Crab Noodle Soup at 48 Lach Tray street, lane 195 Cau Dat.
Because they were offered to locals, the crab noodle soup sold at the beginning of the narrow alley had the most Hai Phong features. The red rice noodles are boiled in a sweet crab broth and served with shrimp, thin slices of meat, wild betel leaf pork buns, and crispy fried pig fat. Restaurants typically cater to a larger number of visitors. Even if you're only passing through, you should eat the crab noodle soup offered in little lanes. It has a classic flavor and a low price of around VND25,000 to 30,000 (US$1.06-1.27).
Bread sticks
If you don't want soup, you can have bread sticks with fatty pate loaded with chi chuong - a particular type of Hai Phong chili sauce - and a cup of coconut coffee to chill your lips after eating the hot bread sticks.
Old Lady at 57A Le Loi street and Spicy Bread and Thai Tea at 37 Dinh Tien Hoang street are two places where you may get such bread sticks. However, visitors must line and buy before 8 a.m. because these stores are well-known and only offer a limited number of bread each day. If you wish to buy a large quantity of bread sticks as a present, you must order 1 to 2 hours ahead of time because the bread is only produced to order.
Rice cakes
Other foods offered in the afternoon are typically considered snacks, allowing people to have supper later. You may have a dish of banh beo, which are steamed rice cakes stuffed with minced beef, peppers, onions, and sweet and sour fish sauce.
Visitors may sample these foods in Cat Bi market, Dong Quoc Binh market, or Luong Van may market. These are the well-known marketplaces in Hai Phong. They're recognized for serving a wide range of cuisines at moderate pricing. These markets offer distinct dining sections, allowing guests to sample a variety of meals without having to walk too far. You may discover and eat these foods even if you walk in off the street.
Sui din
Sui din is a meal that goes well in chilly weather. This is a glutinous rice dumpling filled with green bean or black sesame, served with hot ginger water and topped with a bit of shredded coconut. Co Ut at 163 Cau Dat street, shop at 49 Dinh Tien Hoang street, and shop at 34 Ky Dong street are all well-known sellers of this cuisine. Despite the fact that they are merely street food sellers, they are constantly busy, especially on chilly days.
Snail
There are several wonderful foods available in the evening, the most notable of which are snail delicacies. This is an excellent option for those who want to take their time eating. In Hai Phong, there are many different varieties of snails, including sea snails, nail snails, and wool snails. They are prepared in the Saigonese way, but with less sweetness to suit the northern palate.
Tuyet snail in the alley next to 27 Le Loi Street, Online Snail at 52 Dan Lap Street, and Huong snail at 274 Hang Kenh Street are three well-known snail eateries. These snail eateries are usually my group's favorite weekend gathering spot since there are so many different types of fresh snails that are prepared into a variety of meals with strong flavor and spices, exactly like the Hai Phong people.
Chrysanthemum tea
Other cuisines, such as chrysanthemum tea, can be consumed at any time of day. Due to the combination of licorice and fresh kumquat, the tea has a bit of a bitter flavor on the tip of the tongue, but quickly becomes sweet while coming down the throat. The streets of Phan Boi Chau and Minh Khai are densely packed with chrysanthemum tea merchants.
Gia be
Gia be, a kind of mollusc, is stir-fried with vinegar, fish sauce, turmeric powder, and arrowroot powder. Gia be has two thin shells and a flattened oval form. The flesh in the center is comparable to that of clams and mussels.
Patience is required to enjoy this meal. If you wish to consume the flesh, you must first remove the shell from each one. You may consume the meat as well as the separate leg component. This is just a fun snack meal; you won't feel full after eating it.
Coconut milk coffee
Coconut milk coffee is produced by whisking together coffee powder, coconut milk, and condensed milk to form a paste. Toppings such as glass jelly, tapioca pearls, fresh shredded coconut, and dried coconut chips can be added based on the customer's tastes.
This drink has a little bitter flavor of coffee paired with the sweetness of coconut milk and the scent of condensed milk, making it simple to consume because it is neither harsh nor excessively sweet. Co Hanh Coconut Coffee at 148 Luong Khanh Thien street, Ms Hang at 124a Lam Son street, Le Chan district, and many more coffee shops serve this drink in Hai Phong.
Fermented pork bun
The Ba Cu vendor's fermented pork bun is firm and crispy. Each dish typically contains two spring rolls and is accompanied with vinegar fish sauce. A huge basket of fresh herbs is a unique aspect of the meal. This cuisine may be found near the intersection of Ton That Thuyet and Phan Boi Chau Streets.
Banh duc tau
Banh duc tau, or steamed rice cake, is a Chinese cuisine that has become a popular snack in Hai Phong. Toppings such as papaya or kohlrabi, prawns, and pork belly are added to the steamed rice cake.
Hai Phong cuisine is so diversified that it is difficult to locate a similar food culture anywhere. Hai Phong boasts a lot of ethnic food. Furthermore, because the city is located near the sea, there is an abundance of fish. The residents have the chance to experience many different cuisines from other areas thanks to the Hai Phong port, and the food has become a speciality of Hai Phong via the process of modifying and upgrading the flavors to fit its unique preferences.
