Bangkok has served as Thailand’s capital for over two centuries since the late 18th century. The well-known buildings such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew present the aspects of royal Thai architecture and art. Bangkok gradually became the largest city in Thailand during the nineteenth century.
The city is situated on the Chao Phraya River delta near the southern coast of the Gulf of Thailand. The average temperature is 32 C, always hot and humid during the year. Normally, there are occasional rains in the afternoon during the rainy season which ranges from June to October.
Canals known as ‘klongs’ and the Chao Phraya River were crucial in transportation and are part of Bangkok's geography. The river cruises here afford glimpses of daily life along the densely populated riverbanks and islands.
The most popular places of interest are the Grand Palace, the Reclining Buddha Temple (Wat Pho), and the largest outdoor market in the world, the Chatuchak Weekend Market. Touring famous Thai foods like curries, papaya salad and Thai noodles or pad thai is also popular.
