With a total size of 719 km2, the Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve is divided into two subdivisions: an ecological recovery subdivision covering 7.15 km2 and a strict protection zone covering 8.75 km2, with a forest covering 98.5% of the reserve's total area.
The Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve is home to a wide variety of rare species that are listed in both the Vietnamese Red Book and the International Red List. Here, mountains, rivers, streams, and rapids combine with old, primordial forests to create a striking natural scene. Kon Chu Rang was included to the list of banned forests that needed to be carefully maintained in 1986.
The wildlife includes the gray-shanked douc langur, tiger, hand-haired flying squirrel, yellow-cheeked gibbon, Ja Va pangolin, fire leopard, brocade cat, clouded leopard, horse bear, and many rare and valuable species. The Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve is ranked in Category A for its relevance to biodiversity on a global scale.
Up to now, this area has recorded 1,466 species of flora and fauna (discovered 12 new species such as: Lasianthus konchurangensis; Psydrax gialaiensis...). With the flora has recorded 875 species (22 species listed in the Vietnam Red Book, 7 species in the International Red Book such as cylindrosum, silk cylindriculus, short-leaved pine, rosewood, woody fern, cycad. big fruit flavor, flower slices, agarwood…).
The fauna including vertebrate wildlife has recorded 380 species (80 species of mammals; 228 species of birds; 38 species of reptiles; 34 species of amphibians), of which 64 species are on the list of species that need to be protected. national and international conservation priorities such as: gray-shanked douc langur, tiger, Javan pangolin, civet, flying civet, bear, white pheasant, hornbill, brown heron, black-headed babbler, cobra God…
The insect system has 211 species, including species on the list of species that need to be prioritized for national conservation such as the three-horned scarab beetle, the y-horned scarab, the rainforest monarch butterfly, and the bird-winged phoenix butterfly. The fungal system has recorded 66 species, including 5 new species recorded for the first time in Vietnam.
In Kon Chu Rang nature reserve, there are 12 waterfalls over 15 m high in the middle of the primeval forest, such as Kpung waterfall, Toc Tien waterfall, K50 waterfall... are all waterfalls that tourists love to explore. In the forest core area, there are 17 households who are Ba Na ethnic people living, their main source of income is from livestock and other benefits from old forests.
