Located about 35 km from the city center, Ganh Yen is home to a unique open-air coral reef. Over millions of years of geological tectonics, many volcanic sedimentary rocks in the area of Ganh Yen Quang Ngai stacked on top of each other, creating an interesting landscape.

The reason for the name "Ganh Yen" is because in the past, the rocks in this area often had many small rock holes, which were the habitat of birds such as swift lets, starlings, etc. The rocks here are rough and layer on top of each other, forming a towering cliff stretching out to the sea.

At the beginning of the month or on the full moon day, many coral clusters bloom like cabbage protruding above the sea in the area near the coast. From April to July of the lunar calendar every year, when the tide recedes, Ganh Yen Quang Ngai appears exposed coral reefs spreading on the sea, forming a natural picture that is both strange and beautiful.

Exploring the open-air coral in Ganh Yen has many different shapes and colors that make visitors excited. There are clusters of yellow corals like daisies, red-brown clusters protruding from the sea surface, clusters of black velvet like cat mushrooms... There are also sea grapes growing in dense clusters on the reefs.

However, in recent years, due to climate change, plus people diving to catch urchins, exploiting seaweed and tourists coming to visit and trampling corals, the area of coral reefs in Ganh Yen Quang Ngai decreased significantly.

Therefore, the program to sponsor small projects, the Global Environment Fund, the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam are implementing a sustainable development project at Ganh Yen to manage coral protection and development design at the same time propagate to people and visitors about the responsibility to protect nature, protect the living environment of people and marine life.
