Ba Be Lake is located around 220 kilometers from Hanoi in Nam Mau commune, Ba Be district, Bac Kan province. The natives call Ba Be lake as Siam Pe, which translates to three lakes. The lake gets its name from the meeting of three rivers of the Pe Lam, Pe Lu, and Pe Leng rivers.

The lake is 8 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide, and it is located at a height of 145 meters above sea level. Not only is the lake one of the top 20 largest natural freshwater lakes in the world, but it has also been recognized as an ASEAN heritage garden since 2004. 


Ba Be Lake, situated in the middle of a large limestone mountainous region, has a wild and romantic beauty with a calm and pleasant environment. The lake has a mysterious and fuzzy beauty in the early morning, when the mist has not faded away, but when the sun is high, under the bright sunlight, the lake surface looks like a charming watercolor painting with the shadow of mountains and clouds, captivating everyone, even the most demanding tourists.

Tay girls in indigo costumes are more romantic, occasionally hiding or emerging on little boats in the middle of the immensity of the sky and lake. The waterfall is almost 1,000 m long and has three stone stairs that are around 3 to 4 m apart, producing a wild and spectacular feature for Ba Be Lake. 

Ba Be Lake attracts visitors not only with the beauty of a lake in the middle of the mountain with a system of ponds and caves, but also with more than 417 kinds of plants and 299 species of animals. There are about 49 freshwater fish species on the surface of the lake, including several rare species like glass carp, blue carp, Anh Vu crap, and halibut.


In addition to enjoying the natural landscape, visitors to Ba Be Lake learn about the everyday lives of the Tay, Mong, and Dao ethnic groups who live in 15 villages inside the national park. People here are very welcoming; simply ask and you will be invited to their homes to drink a cup of spicy corn wine and eat pork in every kitchen.
