By the time of President Ngo Dinh Diem, Palace 1 was repaired and built more tunnels. The tunnel is 4km long, connecting from Palace 1 to Palace 2 as well as leading to other villas nearby. After Ngo Dinh Diem's death, the mansion was used as a resort for successive heads of state until 1975.
