Myanmar Border Bridge Open Longer
Opening hours for the Myawady-Mae Sot Friendship Bridge border crossing between Myanmar and Thailand will be extended to 05:00 to 20:00, instead of 06:00 to 18:00, to support trade and tourism.
The new opening hours need to be approved by both countries.
According to local media in Myawady, an official at the bridge checkpoint said: “We have received instructions from the Kayin State government to extend the opening hours at the Friendship Bridge. The Myanmar side is ready. It is now up to Thai officials to respond.”
More travellers are using the mountain road from the border to cross to the Andaman Sea coastal area of Myanmar or even travel as far as Yangon. However, the trip takes considerable time and often they arrive at the border after the checkpoint has closed.
The bridge connects the border towns of Myawady with Mae Sot, Tak Province.
It was temporarily closed from 28 March to 3 April in 2007 due to the import of illegal cars. It was temporarily closed again July 2010 due to Thailand’s river bank protection construction project on the Mae Sot side of the Thaungyin (Moei) River.
The bridge reopened in December 2011.
