Laos to promote the World’s Best Tourist Destination 2013 award
Laos hopes to capitalize on being awarded the World’s Best Tourist Destination 2013 by the European Council on Tourism and Trade to encourage local entrepreneurs to improve their services.
The award was presented by ECTT, last month, to recognize the government’s promotion of free and fair tourism, safety of tourists, access to sites of historical and cultural significance, investment in the preservation of historical sites and creating tourism benefits for grassroots communities.
Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, tourism marketing director, Kettasone Sundara, announced at the Thailand Travel Mart last week that the award was a great honor for the country.
“We will have to spread the word to the travel industry. A lot of people in tourism do not know of our achievement,” said Mr. Kettasone.
Overseas promotions highlighting the award will depend on whether the country has sufficient budget.
Last year, arrivals to Laos jumped 22% from 2,723,564 to 3,330,072.
“The growth was far beyond our target, which was around 7% to 8%. We have to assess the situation carefully to be able to respond accordingly.”
In 2012, key markets reported strong gains especially Asia: Thailand, +23%; Vietnam, +26%; China, +33%; Korea, +11% and Japan, +55%.
Accommodation establishments have increased in several provinces such as Champasak, Luang Prabang, Vientiane Capital, Vientiane Province, Savannakhet and Sayabouli. The country has 2,030 accommodation establishments with 35,857 rooms. About 77% of them are in guesthouses and resorts.
