The service is part of a project to turn the city’s centre including a convention centre and Cat Ba Island into user-friendly Wi-Fi zones for tourists.

The project cost US$253,000 to establish 25 Wi-Fi hotspots.

Cat Ba Island has been recognised a national landscape since September 2012.

It is submitted to be a national monument. The Cat Ba Island’s profile as a world natural heritage has been submitted to UNESCO.

UNESCO sent a delegation to assess the Cat Ba Island natural heritage asset last year.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung announced 9 December that Cat Ba Island was a national treasure; the first step to gaining recognition and furthering the cause with UNESCO to designate the island as a natural heritage site in the future.

Cat Ba is the largest of the 366 islands spanning 260 sq km that comprise the Cat Ba Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern edge of Halong Bay in North Vietnam.

Cat Ba island has a surface area of 285 sq km and maintains the dramatic and rugged features of Halong Bay. It is commonly used as an overnight hotel stop on tours to Halong Bay offered by travel agents from Hanoi.

This island belongs to Hai Phong City.

Vietnam has introduced free Wi-Fi for visitors in Hoi An, Danang, Halong, Hue, Da Lat and at Saigon Railway Station.

Over the next two years Quang Ninh province will provide more free Wi-Fi at economic and tourist hub cities such as Uong Bi, Cam Pha, Van Don and Mong Cai.
