Hanoi Plans For Heritage Reservation
Historical sites in Hanoi such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Temple of Literature and Hoa Lo Prison will be given a facelift according to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
According to the plan, the department will focus on repairing damaged areas, while replacing damaged sections of Hoa Phong Tower, Ngoc Son Temple and other areas around Hoan Kiem Lake.
In addition, the department will add tourism products in the area and organise traditional art performances at Tran Ba Temple as well as festivals built around historical legends related to the lake.
“The Temple of Literature will be developed into a cultural centre, where more artistic events will take place for visitors,” a department official said.
Several measures to preserve and restore Hoa Lo Prison are also being planned.
Visitors will be able to talk to former political prisoners to learn more about prison conditions during an era before the communist revolution.
Hoa Lo prison was built in Hanoi by French colonialists in 1896 and was notorious for its dreadful living conditions and torture that killed around 200 revolutionary soldiers.
During January to September this year, tourist arrivals to the city reached 4,686,552, a mix of domestic and international trips, representing an 11.2% growth over the same period last year.
